It seems like an obvious answer; a lot! But when you ask people to tell you a few of the important factors related to internet marketing, they can hardly come up specific answers.
One of the most important knowledge you gain from gathering information on your competitor is the keywords that they are using, as well as how well they are doing in your market with these keywords. Once you have this information, you can do a keyword analysis to see how viable this keyword is for your presence, or if it is even worth to pursue it. In other words, if your competitor is dominating the marketplace with this keyword, it may be a better idea to focus on another one to take market share. In a sense, this information will also put you in the right direction so you don’t waste your valuable resources in pursuing something which is not feasible for you.
Secondly, you gain considerable insight as to where most of your competitors’ traffic is coming from, even further, you will know if they are actually paying for their traffic. This information can be quite invaluable to either take some portion of the market away from your competitors, or gain more grounds by implementing the same strategy with other keywords that you may be pursuing.
How about knowing where competitors links are coming from, if they are paying for some of their links, or maybe link exchanging. Furthermore,, what percentage is do-follow and what percentage is no-follow. This will again give you a competitive edge to counter their link building strategies to be able to take a nice market share.
Needless to mention the information you gain on their social media marketing strategies can be priceless! How are they connecting with their clients? How strong is their presence in Facebook, Google+, or Twitter? How about their video marketing… How do they market their products and services through videos, who are they mostly targeting??? All valuable information to set your own counter marketing strategies to gain grounds.
When you start seeing the whole picture, you start realizing that internet marketing is indeed a multi-dimensional process, where you need to be in a constant evaluation of yourself and your competitors, and going back to the drawing board to reevaluate your strategies and implementing them back with constant revisions to gain grounds.
